This is a true story, which took place in Lisbon during the first lockdown.
How do we keep special occasions alive when you can’t celebrate together?
A year ago in Lisbon, a scary-looking man, by way of a small gesture, succeeded in transforming restrictions into possibility. And it was in this way that the memory of the revolution was delivered directly into people’s homes. All the city’s letterboxes bursted with red carnations.
The 25 April is a feast day in Portugal as well2 .
On 25 April 1974, a coup d’etat ended the long authoritarian regime of Salazar and democracy returned
A florist gave red carnations to the soldiers who placed the flowers in the barrel of their guns and it is for this reason that every year, on that day, hoards of citizens crowd the city streets exchanging red carnations, a symbol of revolution and freedom.
