How to use Books is a series of 5 posters created for the Spazio BK2 bookshop in Milan, born as a reflection on the question: what are books for?
The images created derive from a careful observation of the life which gravitates around SpazioBK – an independent bookshop dedicated to the world of images, extensive research into the books they sell and the broad variety of cultural activities which permeate its shelves, with the objective to illustrate some of the ways in which it’s possible to interact with books.
The first image in the series – requested by the Éditions du Livre3 publishing house – was transposed by substituting some of the books present in the image with “real” books from the publishing house’s catalogue which are on sale at SpazioBK.
The last image created for the series was chosen to portray the educative journey, “Il libro nella giungla” (The book in the jungle) was designed in order to develop the relationship between people and books with pictures.
“By combining the skills acquired from the editorial and educational-creative sectors and capitalizing on the experiences with the Spazio B**K bookshop and art therapy with the Spazio Ars4 association; we imagined a jungle full of illustrated books where it was possible to investigate on-site with educators, parents, teachers, booksellers, librarians and enthusiasts on what it might mean to have the power of choice in a spontaneous area of editorial biodiversity”.
“The image becomes a metaphor which the illustrator Anna Resmini brought to life, taking us to the heart of the search: a child engrossed in reading whilst crossing the jungle on the back of a giant tiger. It makes one wonder: are they scared, are they OK, do they want to escape? How were they able to tame the animal that is carrying them? And most of all, what might they be reading with such intensity and concentration?”
